Cognitive Hypnotherapy

Why Cognitive Hypnotherapy?

If you've ever tried to change a behaviour at a conscious level (with rational thought, for example), you probably discovered that it was either impossible or that the change simply didn't last. This is because most of the problems that we experience exist at an unconscious level.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy goes to the root of the problem, to the unconscious thought processes that underpin those unwanted behaviours and emotions. Here at this level, they can be quickly and easily transformed, leading to lasting change.

What is Cognitive Hypnotherapy?

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a brief therapy which evolved from a broad range of psychologies, sciences, and theories. It incorporates a range of tools and techniques and is based on a flexible approach that allows each client to experience a treatment plan which is tailored to their own personal needs.

How does Cognitive Hypnotherapy work?

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is an interactive process that involves both client and therapist. Your involvement is important because the understandings and resources that you discover for yourself and from yourself are far more effective than anything I could come up with myself.

So emphasis is placed on your unique experience of your problem and the individual nature of what the solution means to you. Your own insights are ultimately what transform your problem and move you toward the person you want to be.

We will use a range of techniques during our sessions, and there are tools you can use between sessions to consolidate the work already done. In both cases, the choice of technique will depend on your unique needs and how each session evolves moment to moment.

Then what happens?

By changing the problem issue at a non-conscious level, you achieve lasting change. And solving a problem in one area of your life usually results in further benefits rippling out across other areas that you hadn't even thought of.

... provides a bespoke treatment plan

Cognitive Hypnotherapists recognize that what the solution to your problem means to you is unique to you, and therefore not something we can assume that we know. So we guide you to achieving uniquely what you want.

... acknowledges that you already have exactly what you need to solve your problem; you just need help finding it

Cognitive Hypnotherapists recognize that the understandings and resources that you discover for yourself and from yourself are far more effective than anything the therapist can come up with him/herself.Treatment is designed in response to your unique way of experiencing the world and your problem, and the individual nature of what the solution to that problem means to you. Sessions are tailored for and adapt to your specific needs, making change far more effective than with one-size fits-all scripts.

... is an interactive approach

Guiding you to find your own solutions involves a spirit of collaboration where we work together towards an agreed outcome, and where responsibility for that outcome resides as much with you as with the therapist. The therapist is an agent, not an authority, and you are an active participant, not a passive subject. Far from watching a swinging pocket watch and drifting off to sleep, your experience will be full of insights and discovery as we work together on solving your problem.

... was established by Trevor and Rebecca Silvester at the Quest Institute

Trevor and Rebecca formed The Quest Institute in 2001. Trevor's goal is to make the practice of therapy more about the science of self-improvement. His intention is never to represent anything as being true, his yardstick being only that it's useful. He doesn't see Cognitive Hypnotherapy itself as the way to do things, but merely as a flexible model that provides a way of thinking about how to do therapy, and within which there is room for anything that works from any other approach.

... evolved from a broad range of psychologies, sciences, and theories

Cognitive Hypnotherapy draws from recent discoveries and ideas from evolutionary psychology, positive psychology, cognitive theory and NLP, and incorporates them into a modern idea of hypnosis to provide a framework for therapy. Trevor has taken the best elements of these other approaches and incorporated them into a model that provides the Cognitive Hypnotherapist with a way of mixing different techniques together to create a brief therapy that is unique to each client.

... is continuously evolving

As models and concepts within related fields evolve, Cognitive Hypnotherapy actively pursue these developments, incorporating the latest discoveries from science and psychology and assimilating anything that works.

... is based on a range of approaches, theories and techniques

Cognitive Hypnotherapy incorporates research and developments from many disciplines including:

  • cognitive science: how information is represented and transformed in the brain
  • evolutionary psychology: how psychological adaptations that evolved to solve recurrent problems in human ancestral environments determine our actions
  • neuroscience: how information from the senses is encoded and stored in the nervous system and how its meaning influences behaviour
  • neuro linguistic programming: a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences underlying them.

... takes a modern view of hypnosis

Insights from Stephen Wolinsky and NLP have influenced the way in which Cognitive Hypnotherapy views the trance state.

Unlike traditional hypnotherapy where only induced trance states are recognised and where the trance state is viewed as a special state that requires a deep level for effective change, Cognitive Hypnotherapy recognises trance as a naturally occurring state experienced by everybody on a daily basis and that effective and lasting change can be made with only a light level of trance.

... incorporates the unique WordweavingTM suggestion formula

As a contrast to classical hypnotherapy's 'one-size fits all' direct, authoritarian suggestions, Cognitive Hypnotherapy uses suggestions that are based on the unique WordweavingTM suggestion formula which utilises words that are unique to the client's individual experience of their problem and what their solution would be. Because of their perfect fit, these tailored suggestions are accepted more readily and, consequently, are far more effective.
